Thatcham missed a chance to go third with a home defeat while Reading climbed into the play-off places

?

A JOBI McAnuff brace wrapped up the perfect Boxing Day present for the Royals against Brighton at Madejski Stadium yesterday (Monday).
Reading started the better with Jimmy Kebe and Simon Church both going close within the opening ten minutes.
McAnuff broke the deadlock seven minutes later with a cool finish after being found in the box by Kebe.
The goal seemed to galvanise Brighton, who started to gain more possession but created little in the way of clear-cut chances.
Then in the second minute of injury time, Reading doubled their lead when McAnuff cut inside from the left and hit a fierce shot passed Brighton goalkeeper, Casper Ankergren.
The away side had the better of the second half but were let down by poor finishing.
Ryan Harley tested Reading goalkepper, Adam Federici, from close range but the Australian stood tall.
Brighton striker, Craig Mackail-Smith, also had a couple of chances but failed to hit the target.
The game was wrapped up in injury time when Brighton right back, Adam El-Abd, steered Kebe?s cross into his own net.
There wasn?t as much festive cheer in Thatcham as Town lost 1 v 0 at home to North Leigh.
Thatcham are now fourth in the Evo-Stik League Southern Division One South & West.
Thatcham will be hoping to bounce back on New Years Eve when they entertain Didcot Town at home at 3pm.
Newbury, Hungerford and Reading are also in action on New Years Eve.
Newbury entertain Lambourn Sports at home (3pm) with Hungerford travelling to Wimborne Town (1pm) and Reading at home to Ipswich (3pm).

German Court Rules Muslim Student Disturbed the Peace by Praying (Time.com)

This post is in partnership with Worldcrunch, a new global-news site that translates stories of note in foreign languages into English. The article below was originally published in S?ddeutsche Zeitung.

(MUNICH) -- Yunus M., an 18-year-old Muslim high school student at Diesterweg Gymnasium in Berlin, Germany, has failed in his fight for the right to pray in the public corridors at school. The latest decision concerns this individual case only, judges at the Federal Administrative Court emphasized. But should the plaintiff, who is near graduation, opt to pursue the matter, the only further legal recourse open to him is the Federal Constitutional Court.

The question that the case raises, however, remains: should Muslim students be able to pray openly at school?

Four years ago, Yunus M. and seven friends gathered in the school corridor to bow in the direction of Mecca. The school's director forbid them to do it again, and the case went through a local court, then a court of appeal, before being heard at the Federal Administrative Court in Leipzig. (See photos of Ramadan in the year of the Arab Spring.)

According to chief justice Werner Neumann, students have a fundamental right to pray at school. He said, however, that religious freedom has its limits if it threatens to cause social friction within the school, as was the case here. The court agreed with the position of the school, whose director stated that there had been repeated religious conflicts at the school, and that at an establishment where 90% of the students were not German it was impossible for them all to claim a right to pray there publically. In addition, the director stated, Yunus M. had been offered a space where he could pray privately.

A case-by-case issue?

The case had previously resulted in contradictory court decisions. In September 2009, the Berlin Administrative Court decided in favor of Yunus M., a ruling which the Administrative Appeals Tribunal overturned six months later.

The Berlin Administrative court called in jurist Matthias Rohe, an expert on Islam, who said that the Muslim boy's stance was a "plausible opinion in the spectrum of religious freedom" and that Yunus M. was not an extremist. The Appeals Tribunal called in a colleague of Rohe's, Tilman Nagel, who stated that even the prophet Mohammed had put off praying to make community life simpler.

Yunus M.'s case underscores a basic tension: Do state institutions have to accept strict, conservative, even fundamentalist practices when other interpretations are possible? (See the top 10 world stories of 2011.)

The Leipzig court avoided this debate by stressing the individual nature of its decision. For this the court earned praise from some Christian churches. Spokespersons for the Berlin-Brandenburg Evangelical Church and the Archdiocese of Berlin said the court's decision aligned with the freedom of religion guaranteed by the Basic Law of the Federal Republic of Germany.

Yunus M.'s lawyer said they were waiting for the written decision before deciding whether or not to go to the Supreme Court, a move he described, nevertheless, as unlikely.

India, Mauritius begin talks on revised tax treaty

Indian and Mauritian tax officials have begun talks on revising the double taxation avoidance pact between the two countries and the issue is likely to come up for discussion during the upcoming visit of the Prime Minister of Mauritius to India.

"Preliminary discussion has taken place this month in Mauritius. Mauritius Prime Minister is scheduled to come India," a top official in the Finance Ministry told PTI.

Earlier in 2006, India and Mauritius had agreed to review the operation of a Joint Working Group to strengthen the mechanism for exchange of information under the tax treaty, besides putting in place adequate safeguards to prevent misuse of the DTAA.

"We in India see treaty misused but they see it as part of treaty. We will again raise our concern," the official said.

Mauritius tops the list of countries bringing foreign direct investment into the country.

India has already posted a tax information officer at the Indian High Commission in Mauritius to enhance cooperation between the two countries.

The revised Double Taxation Avoidance Convention (DTAC) is expected to pave way for sharing of banking and tax-related information between the two countries and prevent money laundering and evasion of taxes.

The revised treaty, according to sources, will be addressing the controversial clauses relating to capital gains tax on sale of securities.

While short-term capital gains are taxed at 10 per cent in India, they are exempted in Mauritius. Several companies take advantage of the DTAA and escape paying taxes in both the countries.

Around 42 per cent of FDI and about 40 per cent of FII fund flows into India are routed through the island nation.

It is believed that a large majority of them are third country investors which use the DTAC with Mauritius for saving capital gains tax.

Aircraft wreck found off Florida's Atlantic coast

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) -- A scuba diver in Florida says he's found the remains of a WWII-era aircraft on the ocean floor.

Randy Jordan of Emerald Charters tells The Palm Beach Post that he was diving at a depth of around 200 feet four miles off Jupiter last week when he spotted the remains of an aircraft. The plane was upside down but still mostly intact.

Jordan says he believes the plane is a Curtiss Helldiver SB2C.

If he's right, it would be the second Helldiver wreck found underwater in two years. One of the planes was found off Hawaii in January 2010.

Jordan says he has plans to take more divers to the site, but they have to proceed cautiously because the plane still could contain live ammunition or human remains.

South Africa: Black Glamour Magazine Drum Turns 60

Radio Netherlands Worldwide (Hilversum)

26 December 2011

Yellowed cover pages of South Africa's iconic Drum magazine evoke a 1950s black fashion and jazz culture which perished when apartheid forces razed Sophiatown, a racially-mixed Johannesburg suburb.

This year Drum turned 60 and even today South Africans link the magazine to Sophiatown, a restless and vibrant suburb which was home to blacks, coloureds, Indians and Chinese.

Between 1955 and 1960, residents were forcibly removed and relocated to townships outside Johannesburg because white blue-collar areas sprang up nearby, fuelling the perception that Sophiatown was too close to white suburbia. It was flattened, repopulated with poor whites and renamed Triomf, which is Afrikaans for 'Triumph'.

"Sophiatown set the pace, giving urban African culture its pulse, rhythm, and style during the 1940s and 1950s," said cultural anthropologist David Coplan in his book 'In Township Tonight'. "Even as government bulldozers were levelling its houses, Sophiatown generated a cultural flowering unequalled in the urban history of South Africa," Coplan said.

Snazzy gangsters

Sophiatown's snazzy gangsters drove around in chrome-laden US convertibles inspired by African American culture. The 70,000 locals proudly called their suburb 'Little Harlem'. And, just like its role model New York, Sophiatown brimmed with jazz, with star performers such as legendary protest singer and Africa's most famous diva Miriam Makeba, Dolly Rathebe, Dollar Brand and Hugh Masekela.

At the centre of this vibrant suburban life were Drum journalists who "produced the best investigative journalism, short fiction, satirical humour, social and political commentary, and musical criticism South Africa had ever seen," Coplan wrote.

German photographer Jurgen Schadeberg made a name with his cover page photos depicting the town's urban life, challenging racist views of Africans as simply farm or mine workers.

Reporter Henry Nxumalo was famous for his investigative pieces. Fondly called 'Mr Drum', Nxumalo once enlisted as a farm worker to expose the brutality of white farmers. He was stabbed to death in 1957 while investigating abortions. Nxumalo's life story was portrayed in a 2004 film, aptly called 'Drum'.

No apartheid

Journalist Peter Magubane described the atmosphere in the newsroom thus: "Drum was a different home; it did not have apartheid. There was no discrimination. It was only when you left Drum and entered the world outside of the main door that you knew you were in apartheid land."

Over 50 years after the quarter was demolished and suburban houses built on its ruins, a small museum keeps Sophiatown's memory alive, with the help of some photographs from Drum. "Sophiatown was a vibrant place - there was life in Sophiatown! Everything was happening there," enthused Mbali Zwane, a young guide at the museum.

Symbolism and romanticisation

Renamed Sophiatown again, the suburb is more important for its symbolism than its reality. The cosmopolitan suburb that defied apartheid laws on racial mixing presents a more romantic image of black South Africa than the dilapidated townships on the edge of town where people of colour had been relegated.

"There is a romanticisation of Sophiatown that has to do with nostalgia," said Noor Nieftagodien, a historian at Johannesburg's Witwatersrand University. "That is understandable. The community represented a kind of urban life that apartheid destroyed."

In the same way memories of blacks, Indians, mixed race people living in harmony persists, though the population was actually overwhelmingly black. But Sophiatown was no paradise, said Nieftagodien. Tenants were often exploited by unscrupulous landlords. Most of the people were poor and it was riddled with slums.

The magazine is inextricably linked with the suburb's idealised memory, he said. At the same time Drum writers did not live the same reality as Sophiatown residents. "A lot of the journalists who wrote for Drum belonged to a particular elite, middle class. For them, Sophiatown was a glamourous world. It was their microcosm world."

Spirit lost

Over the years the arbiter of 1950s elegance also changed. Drum gradually started running fewer and fewer stories and more pictures. It was bought by Naspers in 1984, at the time a staunchly pro-apartheid media house and these days a global media group. Its star writers were jailed, killed, exiled, or fell to alcoholism.

Today the magazine is the black version of Naspers' local English and Afrikaans gossip titles You and Huisgenoot. The English and Zulu language editions are nothing close to the glamour and exposes of old, and the 60th birthday edition harkens back to a spirit of Sophiatown which the magazine itself has lost.

Speaking Of Christmas Miracles? This Guy Can Fly (Almost)

WingsIf you could have one superpower, what would it be? Mind control would be my answer (I hope to be an evil genius when I grow up). But it seems the most popular answer to that question is the ability to fly. Jarnos Smeets, a mechanical engineer from the Netherlands, is working really hard to make that a reality. How, you ask? Well, he's building real-life wings (just like the wings on a bird). By first combining the accelerometers of the WiiMote and an HTC Wildfire S, he can now measure the arm-speed of his own movements and thus control the outrunner motors on his DIY wings.

Facebook Opens Mobile News Feed As Viral Channel For Games

Mobile News Feed GamesOne upon a time, Facebook game companies like Zynga fattened up their user counts thanks to viral distribution to non-gamers through the news feed. Facebook later curtailed this channel, forcing developers to concentrate on paid marketing and true word of mouth to grow. A new boom period could be coming, this time for mobile developers, as Facebook announced today that it is testing game stories in the mobile news feed. This could attract devs to its recently launched HTML5 mobile gaming platform with bait of reaching hundreds of millions of daily active Facebook mobile users.

AQUOS PHONE IS14SH: Sharp Integrates Android 2.3 Into Feature Phone Body

Picture 1It seems Sharp saw good sales when the company launched the so-called AQUOS PHONE THE HYBRID 007SH on the Japanese market, the world's first clamshell Android phone. Today, Sharp's AQUOS PHONE IS14SH [JP] went on sale in Japan, and again they squeezed a ton of smartphone functions into a feature phone body. The obvious target here are customers who want to type on a physical slide-out keypad but don't want to miss out on the typical specs a Japanese Android phone is offering.

IRISphoto 4

The IRISphoto 4 ($99 direct), from I.R.I.S. Inc. is all about simplicity. You don't need to know anything about scanning to use it; you don't have to change any settings (in fact, there are no settings you can change); and you don't even have to connect the scanner to a computer to scan. Just turn the IRISphoto 4 on, put the photo you want to scan in the input slot, and the scanner will handle everything else automatically. If that sounds like your kind of scanner, read on.

In many ways, the IRISphoto 4 is similar to the Pandigital Personal Photo & Negative Scanner/Converter PanScn05 ($99.99 direct, 3.5 stars) and Kodak P460 Personal Photo Scanner ($109.99 direct, 3.5 stars) that I reviewed earlier this year. All three are limited to a maximum 4- by 6-inch size for photographic prints, all three let you scan without connecting to a computer, and all three are aimed at casual?which is to say consumer-level?photographers. However, there are some important differences as well.

Arguably the most important is that unlike the P460 and PanScn05, the IRISphoto 4 can't scan slides or strips of film. Beyond that, both other scanners let you choose between scanning photos at either 300 or 600 pixels per inch (ppi). That is the only settings choice they give you, but it's one more than you get with the IRISphoto 4, which uses 600 ppi in all cases when you're using the supplied protective sleeve or 300 ppi in all cases when you're not using it.

Still another difference is that, unlike the other two scanners, the IRISphoto 4 doesn't give you the option to connect by USB cable and scan directly to your hard disk instead of scanning to memory as a standalone scanner. On the other hand, it offers application software, which is something the other two scanners lack. ACDSee is both a photo album program and a reasonably capable photo editor. When you compare prices, keep in mind that you'd have to buy a photo editor separately for the Kodak or Pandigital scanner.

Setup and Scanning
The IRISphoto 4 measures 1.7 by 6.2 by 2.1 inches (HWD), which is small enough to take with you if you like, as well as store in a desk drawer when you're not using it. It has a 4-inch-wide manual feed slot in the front, along with the power switch and status light. The straight-through path exits in the back. Also in back are a memory-card slot and a mini-USB connector that lets you connect to a computer with the supplied cable, both to move files to the computer and charge the scanner's battery.

Setup consists of charging the battery, which, according to I.R.I.S. takes 4 hours for a full charge. That's it. Scanning is just as easy. The scanner comes with two protective sleeves. Whether you use the sleeve or not will determine the scan resolution. Given that the rollers in a sheet feeder tend to leave marks on originals, however, I'd use a sleeve in all cases.

Scanning with a sleeve consists of putting the photo in the sleeve, putting the sleeve far enough into the slot for the sheet feeder to grab it, and then waiting for the scan to finish. I timed the scans at a reasonably consistent 33 to 36 seconds each. Having two sleeves is a nice touch, since it lets you scan a stack of photos at essentially full speed. The time it takes to scan one photo is easily enough to remove an already scanned photo from the other sleeve, put a new one in, and have it ready to feed as soon as the current scan finishes.

Scan Quality and Other Issues
Scan quality for the IRISphoto 4 is comparable to the quality for other inexpensive sheet fed photo scanners. That translates to being good enough for casual photographers who don't have a critical eye and don't have any interest in printing the photos at a larger size than the original.

One advantage that the IRISphoto 4 has over the competition is the included software, which can do a reasonably good job of removing dust specks, adjusting brightness and contrast, and more, including adjusting shadow, midtones, and highlights separately.

If you need to scan film as well as prints, the P460 or PanScn05 is clearly a better choice than the IRISphoto 4. You might also want to take a look at the somewhat more expensive Kodak P461 Personal Photo Scanner ($139.99 direct, 4 stars) or, if you need to scan prints at up to 8 by 10 inch size, the Kodak P811BK Personal Photo & Negative Scanner ($129.99 direct, 3.5 stars). But if the only thing you need to scan is photos at up to 4 by 6 inches and with snapshot quality, the IRISphoto 4 can do the job, and the included software helps make it a more than reasonable value.

France launches spy satellites aboard Russian rocket (Reuters)

KOUROU, French Guiana (Reuters) ? The second Russian-built Soyuz rocket launched from French Guiana blasted off late on Friday carrying six military spy satellites, space officials said.

The rocket blasted off at 11.03 p.m. (0203 GMT Saturday) from a launch pad at the European Space Agency's (ESA) launch centre near Kourou, French Guiana, on the northeast coast of South America.

About one hour after launch, five of the satellites separated from the rocket.

The first was Pleiades, a one-tonne observation satellite to be used extensively by the French defense ministry.

Several minutes later, the rocket released four ELISA (Electronic Intelligence by Satellite) demonstrator satellites to test space-based mapping of radar transmitters globally for France's Defense Procurement Agency (DGA).

A sixth satellite, for Chile's armed forces, is scheduled for separation at 0639 GMT.

The satellites will also have civilian applications.

The launch was controlled by France's Arianespace rocket launch company.

This was the second time that a Soyuz, which first flew in 1966 and traces its roots back even further to the earliest Cold War intercontinental ballistic missiles, was launched from outside its former Soviet bases.

The first French Guiana-launched Soyuz rocket orbited the first two of Europe's Galileo global positioning satellite constellation last October.

Comet's death-plunge into sun will be well documented

The ill-fated comet Lovejoy is on course to plow through the sun's blisteringly hot outer atmosphere - called the corona - making its closest approach to our star at around 7 p.m. EST Thursday.

A newly discovered comet is set to make a death dive into the sun's atmosphere today (Dec. 15), and scientists will have a ringside seat to watch its fiery demise.

The ill-fated?comet Lovejoy?is on course to plow through the sun's blisteringly hot outer atmosphere - called the corona - making its closest approach to our star at?around 7 p.m. EST today (midnight GMT on Dec. 16). At that point, Lovejoy should be just 87,000 miles (140,000 kilometers) ?from the solar surface.

The comet is not expected to survive this close encounter, experts have said. But if it's any consolation to Lovejoy, the comet's last hours of existence will be well-documented for posterity.?Scientists have trained a phalanx of satellite instruments on the comet, which is what's known as a Kreutz sungrazer.

Spacecraft watching closely

All?Kreutz sungrazers?? so named because their orbits bring them close to the sun ? are believed to be the remains of one giant comet that broke apart several centuries ago. They're named after 19th-century German astronomer Heinrich Kreutz, who first demonstrated that such comets are related.

Comets dive into the sun on a regular basis, but astronomers don't often get much advance notice of the impending event. That's what makes comet Lovejoy, which is officially known as C/2011 W3 (Lovejoy), special. Australian amateur astronomer Terry Lovejoy discovered it on Nov. 27, so scientists have had several weeks to plan their observation campaign. [Death of a Comet: Photos of Sungrazing Comet Lovejoy]

NASA's Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO) and Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) spacecraft will be watching Lovejoy's death plunge closely, as will the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO), a satellite mission operated jointly by the European Space Agency and NASA.

Japan's Hinode spacecraft, which carries some NASA instruments, will also record the comet's last moments. Particle collisions may generate X-rays as Lovejoy streaks through the corona, so Hinode might capture X-ray images of the comet, researchers said.

Though comet Lovejoy is just 660 feet (200 meters) or so wide, it should put on quite a show as it nears the sun. The comet could become as bright as Jupiter or Venus in the sky just before it's destroyed, according to the skywatching website?Spaceweather.com.

Possible target for (careful) skywatchers

Lovejoy may end up being one of the brightest Kreutz sungrazers ever seen, researchers said. While the sun's glare will likely hide it from Earthbound skywatchers' eyes, there's a small chance that blocking the sun out ? behind a building, for example ? could bring the comet into view. WARNING: Never look directly at the sun with your unaided eye or through binoculars or telescopes without special light filters. Severe eye damage can result.

The comet will make its close solar approach around sunset for observers across the continental United States, which could afford a viewing opportunity, experts said.

"If you have one of those nice sunsets where you can actually look right at the sun, be on the watch for the comet on the left of the sun (for northern hemisphere observers)," Karl Battams, a scientist at the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, D.C., wrote on the?Sungrazing Comets website?Wednesday. Battams runs the site, which is devoted to comets discovered by the SOHO and STEREO spacecraft.

Battams cautioned readers, however, never to point a telescope or binoculars at or near the sun; permanent eye damage can result. Staring directly at the sun with the naked eye is also a very bad idea, so aspiring comet-watchers should exercise great care.

Those of us on the ground may get a spacecraft's-eye view of Lovejoy's demise anyway. NASA is planning to set up a special website showing what its SDO satellite sees during the comet's death dive. The space agency will publish the website's URL sometime this afternoon via its website: http://www.nasa.gov, officials said.

(AP) ? Jurors have resumed deliberations in a Utah company's $1 billion federal antitrust lawsuit against Microsoft Corp. and say they're close to a verdict.

Novell Inc. sued in 2004, claiming Microsoft duped it into developing a version of its WordPerfect writing program for Windows 95 only to pull the plug so Microsoft could gain market share with its own Word program.

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates testified last month that Novell just couldn't deliver a compatible WordPerfect program in time for the rollout, and that Microsoft's own Word program was actually better.

Jurors said late Thursday they were making progress deciding whether Novell was entitled to damages. On Friday morning, they said they were close to finishing deliberations.

Syria says "would like" to accept Arab deal (Reuters)

BEIRUT (Reuters) ? Syria said on Monday it "would like" to agree soon to an Arab League peace plan to end its eight-month crackdown on popular unrest, but rejected foreign interference and demanded the annulment of sanctions plus reinstatement in the regional bloc.

The conditions were set in a letter to the League by Foreign Minister Walid al-Mualem, described by his spokesman as a "positive" response requiring an Arab League reply.

In Cairo, Arab League secretary general Nabil Elaraby said "the conditions contained new elements that we have not heard before." Arab foreign league ministers were studying the response.

Syria meanwhile has retaliated against northern neighbor Turkey for the sanctions imposed by its former friend, imposing a tariff of 30 percent on its imports and prohibitive duties on fuel and freight.

Turkey shrugged it off, saying "common sense" should tell Syria that its own people would suffer most.

In a display of muscle that could be intended to deter any idea of foreign military intervention in a crisis which has killed at least 4,000 people, the army staged a big exercise with missiles, rockets, tanks and helicopters.

Top generals watched the war games and state television made it the headline news story, even as the death toll mounted.

Five civilians were killed by security forces in Homs, the country's third largest city, according to the activist website Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. Four died when troops fired on a funeral procession and

One man was shot at a hospital. A youth died of gunshot wounds sustained at the weekend.

In southern Deraa province, three members of the security forces were shot dead by army defectors in front of the Dael courthouse, the website said. The corpse of Ismail Aqla al-Amri, 35, was handed to back relatives in Deraa, a victim of state torture, it said, and dozens more arrests were reported.

SANCTIONS

Already hit by economic sanctions imposed by the United States and Europe, Syria was punished last month by neighboring states, with sanctions announced by the Arab League and imposed by Turkey, once President Bashar al-Assad's ally.

The Arab League's sanctions have yet to take effect. It has repeatedly extended deadlines for Damascus to agree to a peace plan that would see Arab monitors oversee its withdrawal of troops from towns. The latest expired on Sunday.

Foreign ministry spokesman Jihad Makdesi said Damascus was still looking at the Arab League plan.

"The protocol is intended to be signed soon," he said. "The Syrian government has responded positively ...I am optimistic, although I await the Arab League response first."

Syria says the Arab proposal to admit observers infringes its sovereignty, and has asked for clarification. It has stalled more than once and reneged on promises to rein in its forces.

SANA expressed regret mixed with defiance of sanctions.

"The Arab League sanctions ... have been a shock for every Syrian and Arab citizen ... as these sanctions came from sisterly countries," it said. "Syria will overcome those sanctions by virtue of its strategic location and the diversity of its production sectors," the state agency added.

Syria's Arab neighbors Iraq, Lebanon and Jordan have all said they would not join a trade sanctions campaign.

ROCKETS

In a reminder to outsiders of Syria's powerful, mainly Russian-supplied armed forces, state television and SANA showed top generals watching a live-fire exercise by missile units, mechanized brigades and aircraft, to test their capacity in "confronting any attack" on Syria.

It did not report the scale of the war games.

"General (Dawood Abdullah) Rajiha stressed that the armed forces, under the leadership of President Bashar al-Assad will remain loyal to the homeland and will defend the interests of the Syrian people," SANA said. Rajiha is Minister of Defence.

Makdesi, the foreign ministry spokesman, said the war games were a "routine" exercise and not intended to send any message.

The first cracks appeared in one of the pillars of Assad's regime at the weekend with the desertion of some members of the secret police to the ranks of a rebel "free army."

At least a dozen members of the secret police deserted from the Airforce Intelligence complex in Idlib city, 280 km (175 miles) northwest of Damascus, triggering a gunbattle with defectors in which 10 were killed or wounded on either side, activists said.

Opposition sources said a further 16 soldiers defected from units in Idlib on Sunday and a new group of defectors of similar size battled loyalist troops to the south, in the Josieh area on the border with Lebanon.

Assad's opponents estimate the strength of the rebel force at several thousand, mainly army recruits from Syria's Sunni Muslim majority. Members of Assad's minority Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shi'ite Islam, have a tight grip on the military and security apparatus.

SANA on Monday reported military funerals "with flowers and wreaths" for a further seven killed.

Exclusive: EU thinks twice about Iran oil ban (Reuters)

NEW DELHI/LONDON (Reuters) ? The European Union is becoming skeptical about slapping sanctions on imports of Iranian oil, diplomats and traders say, as awareness grows that the embargo could damage its own economy without doing much to undercut to Iran's oil revenues.

Oil accounts for 50 percent of Iranian budget revenues, and those arguing for sanctions say they can deprive Tehran of billions of dollars and derail what the West sees as Iran's attempts to build a nuclear bomb.

But diplomats and oil industry insiders say Europe may calculate that even a small rise in oil prices as a result of an introduction of an EU-wide embargo would more than compensate Tehran for any losses from being obliged to re-route displaced supplies to Asia at discounted prices.

"Maybe the aim of sanctions is to help Italy, Spain and Greece to collapse and make the EU a smaller club," one trader joked.

The remark reflects the growing unease that EU sanctions would hit hardest some of the continent's weakest economies, because Iranian oil provides the highest share of their needs, not to mention the rest of the bloc.

"The likely increase in oil prices that would result from a ban would be felt by all (European) oil refiners, not just those that are big customers for Iranian oil," ratings agency Fitch said last week.

An oil industry source in Greece, which mostly relies on Iranian oil, said: "Greece can't be put with its back to the wall."

The threat to Iran's oil exports and fears about a possible military strike on its nuclear facilities have helped keep oil prices above $100 a barrel despite sluggish global growth and a gradual return of Libyan oil supplies.

Iran, the world's fifth-largest oil exporter, has said it cannot rule out a self-imposed oil embargo to punish the West and on Sunday warned that oil prices could spike to $250 a barrel as a result of sanctions.

The United States has long banned Iranian oil imports and is now moving to ban dealings with the central bank of the Islamic Republic.

Supporters of sanctions say an EU ban would not amount to a supply disruption. Iranian oil displaced from Europe would flow to China, displacing existing sources of Chinese oil towards Europe. They say Beijing, as Iran's buyer of last resort, would then have the leverage to drive a hard bargain on prices.

However, calculations by U.S. research firms and traders show the discount could be as small as a couple of percentage points.

Sanctions critics say the regime of Iraqi former dictator Saddam Hussein was able to withstand sanctions for years.

SAUDI CONTINGENCY

"What's going to happen now is talks with the Saudis, Chinese, Koreans and Indians. Although the political will to impose the sanctions are there, they would only be effective if all the above players helped out -- not followed the sanctions but co-ordinated their response," said a Western diplomat.

Saudi Arabia, the only oil nation with spare capacity, faces a tough choice. Shipping more oil to Europe to replace lost Iranian barrels could mean ceding promising Asian markets to Iran, its political foe.

The Saudis have already started assessing the volume of Iranian supplies that go to their own big buyers.

"It is sort of a contingency plan to know to what extent they can fill the gap and minimize the impact on the market," the source familiar with the Saudi strategy said. "The Saudis want to know their options if something happens."

A source close to the Saudi oil industry in Europe also said Riyadh would consider raising supplies if Iranian oil was lost.

Saudi Arabia has already helped to substitute Iranian supplies once this year, when Tehran threatened to halt oil to India due to a payment dispute which followed U.S. pressure on New Delhi to reduce dealings with Iran.

This week, refiners in India, South Korea and Japan indicated they are reluctant to buy more Iranian crude, fearing that payments troubles could resurface again.

"To make sanctions effective, the Europeans would have to go to the Chinese to ask them not to take more oil," said a senior oil executive, who added that he did not expect sanctions to take place at least until the second quarter of 2012, when seasonal demand eases.

EU politicians have said a decision is unlikely before January at the earliest.

However, industry sources say China has repeatedly shown it is ready to absorb any incremental cheap supplies, especially given that Iran has offered no concession to China or any other buyers in negotiations underway for prices for 2012.

"Plants will be very happy to take more," said one source at China's Sinopec, Asia's largest refiner. "It's definitely good news to Chinese plants if that's the case."

JP Morgan arranges loan for SAP's SuccessFactors buy (Reuters)

BOSTON/FRANKFURT (Reuters) ? JPMorgan Chase & Co is arranging the 1-billion-euro ($1.34 billion) loan that SAP AG is taking on to help pay for its $3.4 billion takeover of SuccessFactors, SAP co-Chief Executive Bill McDermott told Reuters.

"The 1 billion will probably be paid down within about a year. That's how we usually like to do it," McDermott said in an interview on Sunday, a day after announcing the takeover.

The deal, in which SAP is paying a premium of 52 percent over Friday's closing price of SuccessFactors shares, is a major push into cloud-computing services for the German business software company.

McDermott also said the deal could help the company beat its 2015 revenues target of 20 billion euros by as much as 1 billion.

"We had cloud figured out in our 20 billion. We are now upping that 20 billion. It could easily go to 21 billion,"

he said.

Video: Two states want to reclassify marijuana

>> two governors are leading a push to have marijuana reclassified so they can be selling marijuana at pharmacies instead of dispensaries. they are asking the da to downgrade the drug's rating. in case you didn't know marijuana is scheduled as schedule 1 that includes lsd and heroin. they want it dropped to schedule 2 that means pot would join the ranks of cocaine and meth, but legal and commonly predescribed drugs like morphine. marijuana never caused a leagual overdose and less addictive than alcohol and caffeine. the bureau chief for the " huffington post " and author of this is your country on drugs and getting high in america for those of you who didn't know, ryan wrote that book. what do you think? are they going to get any traction?

>> i think they are. when you think about the medical marijuana fight, it's kind of a lot like the gay marriage fight. we are still having a few skirmishes on it, but it's essentially over. opponents are sort of like the japanese soldiers who are in the pacific islands still fighting world war ii in the 1980s . maybe we ought to ? drop leaflets and say look, just leave the pot heads alone. the country has moved beyond this. specifically with these governors, it's a little bit more nuanced. they are trying to put the blame on the federal government . both of those states have passed medical marijuana laws, but they don't want to implement them because either they are squishy politically or nervous for other reasons. they are saying hey, feds, reclassify marijuana and then we will implement this law. plenty of other states, chris christie in new jersey and a number of others are implementing their laws. the district of columbia is moving forward. it's not like people or everyone is afraid of the federal government . obama has promised to back off of states where it's legal. these governors are actually being a little wishy washy and trying to look courageous.

>> let me ask you. you mentioned washington and rhode island , two of the 16 states and mentioned d.c. of course that allow medical use of marijuana . wouldn't it be better overall if you did have the dea change the classification? there people even in states where medical marijuana is legalized that feel they are harassed and dispensaries feel their actions are questioned and they still live under a cloud even though the medical marijuana is legal. don't we need to have a federal action here?

>> no question about it. there was a-year fight with the fda to reclassify it with the da. this summer they ruled that no, they will leave it in schedule 1. it's great that they are taking that fight up again. that does have to happen for this to be a comprehensive ? nationwide policy. that is what you want long-term. in the meantime that's not excuse to say i'm not going to implement the law that the legislature pass and that is signed into law. you are absolutely right in the long-term, but in the short-term, a lot of people need medical marijuana right now and they don't have time to wait for the dea to acknowledge this is over.

>> you are right about that. great to see you. haven't

Fanhattan Beefs Up Selection With New Content Partners: Crackle, Lifetime, And PBS

seinfeldI've always enjoyed using the Fanhattan app. It's smart, available on both iPhone and iPad, and just makes getting to what I want to watch easier. Period. But there was one small gripe I had. In fact, it's not even a gripe. It's just how we all feel about anything good: we want more. Fanhattan has this great Smart Browse system that lets you filter down content by genre, rating, release date, service providers, and then choose how you'd like that content to be sorted. The only problem is that the more filters you use, the fewer options you have left to choose from — sometimes, no options at all. But that's about to change, with three new media partners joining the Fanhattan folds: Crackle, Lifetime, and PBS.
