Officially, the game was moved for "scheduling conflicts." The Rogers Centre, home of the Bills in Toronto, was booked for three of the four weeks of the Bills' pre-season slate. When the Bills and the NFL couldn't guarantee that weekend could be set aside for an all-important pre-season tilt, they were forced into moving it back to Buffalo.

At least one Canadian writer is skeptical about that explanation.

"Unofficially, there will be speculation and suggestions that dumping the August game from the Rogers Centre schedule is due to a 'potential lack of interest,'" said Bill Lankhof of the QMI Agency. "Or at least a lack of interest in spending a week's grocery money to watch a bunch of guys who are mere weeks from playing in the Indoor Football League."

While he did mention that "reality lies somewhere between the two" explanations, Lankhof continues to question the series' viability at the current prices.

The future of the series was also discussed yesterday by both Buffalo Bills CEO Russ Brandon and Rogers Communications' Media President Keith Pelley. Both noted that the two sides are working on a new deal.

"We continue to have dialogue, just as we did at the Super Bowl in Indy, and we?re optimistic that an agreement could be reached," Pelley said in an interview with John Wawrow of The Associated Press. "We?re definitely interested in continuing the relationship with the Bills in Toronto."

One item of note to many uneasy Bills fans is that Rogers is not looking to add regular season games to the series at this time.

"No," Pelley said. "At this point, without getting into any details of the conversation, I think that it would be a deal that would that would certainly work for both sides. We're not looking to increase the number of games."

While tickets prices would be lower, the scope of the deal would likely remain very similar Bills owner Ralph Wilson told the AP in December. Russ Brandon also had comments about extending the deal yesterday.

"We are currently working with Rogers Communications to extend our agreement to play Bills games at Rogers Centre," said Bills CEO Russ Brandon in a statement yesterday. "Our core goal is to continue to regionalize our franchise and continue our series in Toronto which has served us so well."

Unfortunately, the quickest way to fill a need usually involves treating people (others and ourselves) as things.? When?I?m hurting, the last thing I?m prone to care about is human dignity and?freedom.??I just want to meet my need.? Now.? By any means possible.??What?s the quickest way to meet a sexual need?? Porn or prostitution.? What?s the quickest way to win a domestic argument??? Treat my spouse like a punching bag.? What?s the quickest way to meet an economic need?? Treat workers like slaves.?? What?s the quickest way to achieve a political goal?? Treat people like?cattle to be hearded?instead of citizens?deserving of?respect.

And though these may be the quickest means to meet particular ends, they are hardly means that respect the dignity and worth of the human person.? The thing is, it is difficult to object to these practices on reason alone.? All reason can tell us is that people are bags of meat.?Reason can tell us that consciousness exists, but it?can?t tell?us the significance of that fact.? Reason can tell us that, generally speaking, it?s?better for me to treat others with respect?unless I can get away with doing otherwise.???If I have the power to shield myself from the consequences of my actions, why?shouldn?t I treat people as things if it would benefit me?? It simply isn?t reasonable to think otherwise.

Likewise, because they are personal, individual spiritualites tend not to stand up well to social pressure.? Individual spiritualities thrive where religions have made it safe for them to grow.? But when religous faith is stamped out, mere pragmatism?the organized thing-ification of persons?kills spirituality altogether.

The more a person is treated, or treats themselves as a thing, the more they break down.? The cost of porn?? Sexual addiction, depression, lost work hours, broken marriages and families.? The cost of prostitution and sexual trafficking?? Post-traumatic stress, depression, addiction.? The cost of domestic violence?? Depression, suicide, anxiety, addiction, broken marriages and families, and an increase in?all manner of psychosocial disorders in?children.?? The cost of inhumane working conditions?? Depression, suicide, anxiety.? The cost of political oppression?? All of the above.

The Life You Save May Be Your Own

When mainstream?religious faith is in conflict with a particular society as a whole, or with particular groups within a society, it is almost always because?a religious faith is asserting that?a?particular means by which a person or society is?attempting to?satisfy a particular need?runs contrary to the?dignity?or freedom of the human person.

Whatever you think of the nature of their respective creeds, Christianity, Buddhism, Falun Gang, are all mercilessly persecuted in China because they assert that persons must be more than cogs in the system.? Whatever you think of their particular claims,?progressive Christianity came under attack during the civil rights movement just as ?traditional Christianity is?now under legislative attack?in the US because it asserts that certain efficient means of solving social problems are beneath the dignity of the human person.? It is religious faith that consistently asserts, as?point of revelation as?opposed to mere reason, ?that people must be treated as persons, not things.

Moreover, it is organized?religious faiths, more than personal spiritualities, that have the organizational?power to demand social change and?encourage?personal growth and change in a manner that is respectful of the person and the groups those persons participate in (family, work, society).

So, whether you are a believer or not,?the next time?religious faith stands in opposition to a pet solution you favor, stop and consider whether your impulse is driven by a pragmatism that has not considered the dignity and worth of the people around you.????As Flannery O?Connor once put it, the life you save may be your own.

ScienceDaily (Feb. 16, 2012) ? The trefoil factor 3 (TFF3) protein protects and maintains the integrity of the epithelial surface in the normal breast. New research has found that while TFF3 protein expression is higher in well-differentiated low grade tumors and therefore associated with features of a good prognosis, it has a more sinister role in breast cancer invasion and metastasis. The report is published in the March issue of The American Journal of Pathology.

"Our findings suggest that TFF3 is regulated by estrogen and has beneficial properties in breast epithelia," says lead investigator Felicity E.B. May, PhD, of the Northern Institute for Cancer Research and the Department of Pathology at Newcastle University, UK. "We propose that early during breast tumorigenesis, TFF3 retains its association with normal functionality of breast epithelial cells. Subsequently, with the loss of tumor cell differentiation, its function is subverted to promote the development of tumors and infiltration and lymph node metastasis."

To determine the role of TFF3 in breast cancer, researchers measured its level in tissue samples from normal breasts, benign breast lesions, in situ carcinomas, invasive carcinomas, and involved lymph nodes. TFF3 was expressed in the majority of benign and malignant breast lesions studied. Well-differentiated tumor types expressed higher levels of TFF3. There was a positive association between TFF3 protein expression and microvessel density, suggesting that it stimulates angiogenesis in breast tumors.

A striking finding of the study is the strength and consistency of the association between TFF3 expression and a more metastatic phenotype in invasive breast cancer. TFF3 was expressed at higher levels in primary tumors with associated metastasis, and its expression was higher in malignant cells that have metastasized away from those within the primary tumor. There appears to be a switch in the normal polarized secretion of TFF3 in invasive cancer, which allows it to exert invasion-promoting effects.

The study suggests that TFF3 may be one of the genes that mediate the various effects of estrogens in breast cancer. "The paradox remains, however, for both the estrogen receptor and TFF3, that they contribute to the normal physiology of the breast epithelium yet are involved in the progression of cancer," notes Dr. May.

Importantly, the investigators also evaluated the potential of TFF3 as a biomarker of lymphovascular invasion and lymph node metastasis. They found that TFF3 had greater predictive power than other markers analyzed, including tumor grade, age, tumor size and type, and estrogen and progesterone receptor status. "Our study reinforces the view that TFF3 expression merits evaluation as a prognostic biomarker and as a predictive marker of response to therapy," concludes Dr. May. "It is probable that its malign effects will be mitigated by adjuvant endocrine therapy in women with hormone-responsive cancers. However, the usefulness of TFF3 as a marker of hormone responsiveness needs to be evaluated."

THE CONNING TOWER: Camarena-Williams Named USATF Athlete ...

INDIANAPOLIS ? In a week marked by no fewer than three American records, Jillian Camarena-Williams (Woodland HS 2000; Stanford 2004) has been named USA Track & Field?s Athelete of the Week after bettering her own American record with a mark of 19.89m/65-3.75 in the shot put at the USA Track & Field Classic in Fayetteville, Ark.

This was the third time in 12 months for Camarena-Williams to add her name to the history books. She previously set the American record indoors in February of 2011 and tied the record outdoors in July of 2011.

?I'm still working on a lot of things and I'm still trying to tweak my technique,? Camarena-Williams said following her performance. ?I'm very happy with (the meet). Something like this motivates me to keep working hard and I'm looking forward to the next five to six months and see where I'm at."

With Camarena-Williams most recent accomplishment, she now owns five of the top ten indoor throws ever by an American woman. This was Camarena-Williams? sixth time to throw more than 19 meters indoors.

Camarena-Williams was not alone in her record-setting over the weekend. Bernard Lagat and Galen Rupp traded records in the men?s 5,000m and two mile. Competing at the Millrose Games, the eight-time Wannamaker Mile victor Lagat moved up in distance to set the 5,000m indoor American record of 13:07.15. Lagat?s time bettered Rupp?s record of 13:11.44 from 2011 in Birmingham, England and highlighted the 105th running of the Millrose Games. Rupp responded by claiming the national record in the two mile in his debut at the distance. At the USATF Classic, Rupp improved on Lagat?s time from 2011 of 8:10.07 by nearly a second to improve the record to 8:09.72.

The USATF Weekly Wrap-up, including a report from Millrose and other meets around the country, will be published Wednesday.

Now in its eleventh year, USATF?s Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on www.usatf.org. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.

National Flood Insurance Program Extension Gets Bipartisan ...

Sens. David Vitter (R-LA) and Jon Tester (D-MT) have sent a letter to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell urging them to bring legislation to fully extend the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP)?to the floor for debate and passage. The bill was approved by the Senate Banking Committee in September 2011.

?It would be a huge disservice to homebuyers to allow the NFIP to lapse again, as Congress allowed it to do four times for a total of 53 days last year,? said Sen. Vitter. ?Each time the NFIP approaches its expiration date it causes a great deal of turmoil in the housing market because of the uncertainty surrounding the program, and we can easily prevent this from happening. Our bill has broad bipartisan support and is certainly within reach of passing the Senate.?

In December, Sen. Vitter successfully worked to pass through the Senate, with bipartisan support, his bill to extend the NFIP through May 31, 2012.

The text of Vitter and Tester?s letter is below. A bipartisan coalition of 41 senators signed the letter.

Dear Leaders Reid and McConnell:

As we begin the Second Session of the 112th Congress, we the undersigned urge you to bring legislation to the floor to provide for a long-term reauthorization and meaningful reform of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) as expeditiously as possible in February or very soon thereafter.

The National Flood Insurance Program was first established in 1968, and has since that time been instrumental in protecting America?s families, homes and businesses from financial ruin when flooding occurs. The program was last reauthorized in 2004. That reauthorization expired in 2008, and since then the program has been extended through a series of short-term measures. In fact, the program expired four times in 2010 resulting in lapses totaling 53 days. It has been estimated that those program lapses resulted in the delay or cancellation of more than 1,400 home closings per day, further damaging an already fragile housing market.

As you know, the House of Representatives passed its version of a long-term reauthorization on July 12, by an overwhelming vote of 406-22. The Senate Banking Committee has reported a committee print with overwhelming bipartisan support which is currently awaiting floor action. This bill makes essential changes to the program in an attempt to protect taxpayers and restore its solvency. We sincerely believe that, with a concerted effort on the part of Senate and Banking Committee leadership, as well as interested Senators, the bill can be brought to the floor of the Senate, debated and passed as soon as possible in order to ensure this process is completed before the NFIP expires at the end of May.

The Senate should take this opportunity to capitalize on the bipartisan efforts by both the Senate Banking Committee and the House of Representatives thus far to make major improvements to this important program. We believe that passage of a comprehensive, bipartisan flood reauthorization bill is within reach, and we respectfully urge you to schedule such a debate.

The indiscretions of a champagne bubble paparazzi

ScienceDaily (Feb. 14, 2012) ? The innermost secrets of champagne bubbles are about to be unveiled in the Springer journal EPJ ST. This fascinating work is the brainchild of G?rard Liger-Belair, a scientist tackling champagne bubbles from both a physics and a chemistry perspective. Based at the University of Reims, in the heart of the region that gave champagne its name, the author is appropriately affiliated with the 'effervescence team of the molecular and atmospheric spectrometry group' and the 'oenology and applied chemistry' laboratory.

To understand what appears to be a harmless phenomenon such as the fizz in champagne, the author studied the role of the carbon dioxide (CO₂) throughout its journey from the bottle to the glass. Precisely, Liger-Belair focused on the second fermentation stage, resulting in the CO₂ dissolution into the wine -- aided by the addition of yeast and sugar before sealing each champagne bottle -- to the stage where the gas escapes through tiny bubbles popping on the surface of the wine in the glass.

Armed with a high-speed camera, the author produced a series of visually appealing close-up snapshots of the hidden life of these bubbles at every stage of their short existence to analyse the forces at play. He first explained the process underlying their birth through a process called nucleation, triggered by the tiny impurities inside the champagne glass.

He then followed their rise and attributed their extinction when they burst on the surface of the liquid in the glass to the cohesive forces between molecules of the liquid called surface tension. Understanding the source of fizz provides clues on how to fine tune champagne production.

For example, the bubble size can be reduced by a factor that can be calculated by taking into account fermentation sugar levels. However, the method remains fundamentally the same as the one developed by the 17th century Benedictine monk Dom Pierre P?rignon.

Unsecured business loans require the least amount of risk on behalf of the borrower, but the most risk for the lender, so are extremely difficult to be approved. A secured business loan does require collateral, but often has the lowest interest rates as the risk is lower for the lender. The best way to decide is to determine exactly how much money you will need and how adequate your credit history is, if you have poor credit, you may have to rely on bad credit business loans or private investors to secure your funds.

Choose Your Business Structure

Once you know you have the financing in place to fund your business, you will need to decide if you want to go at it on your own or bring in a business partner. If you have trouble securing financing on your own, it may be necessary to bring a business partner in to share the risk and the cost. There are advantages and disadvantages to each one and is ultimately a personal and financial decision that needs to be made.

The last thing that you need to do is file all required legal and financial documents in order to open your doors, or website, for business. The legal aspects are where many small business owners stumble, and particularly when dealing with art, there are also many insurance aspects you will want to ensure are covered.
