Nutritionist and New York Times best-selling author Kimberly Snyder is considered a go-to for many a Hollywood celebrity ? from Drew Barrymore to Hilary Duff and Fergie ? when it comes to eating well, and for a fresh take on nutrition. We caught up with Kimberly to talk her new book, The Beauty Detox Foods, $24.99, where we talked healthy living, food for beautiful skin, anti-ageing and more ?

PRIMPED: Can you tell us about the concept behind your new book, The Beauty Detox Foods?
Kimberly Snyder: The Beauty Detox Foods is three parts: first it summarises the Beauty Detox philosophy then it lists and discusses my top 50 beauty foods by beauty issue including dull skin, acne, cellulite, limp hair and the list goes on. Lastly, there are almost 90 full colour recipes that incorporate all of the beauty foods and are dishes that are inspired by my clients. My program focuses on the powerful link between beauty, health and energy. The key is unlocking our Beauty Energy, the potential energy we all have inside us that can rejuvenate skin, reduce wrinkles, melt away kilograms and give us new-found energy. A very large amount of our energy is spent digesting, and the more energy we spend digesting, the less energy we have to rejuvenate our cells and fight ageing. With the Beauty Detox Solution, you can free up this Beauty Energy, so you can use it to create beautiful skin, hair and nails.
PRIMPED: You talk about the connection between food and beauty ? what kind of results can we expect in our skin and hair by changing our diet?
KS: Many of us are stuck in this vicious cycle where the food we think is healthy and helping us look our best is actually ageing us more. I bet if you opened up your fridge you?d see foods you think are good for you, like low-fat yogurt, free-range chicken, cage-free eggs. But when you look in the mirror in the morning ? and this is especially ladies, before we put on layers of makeup ? you?ll see just how ageing these foods really are in the form of dull skin, dark circles, and fine lines and wrinkles you see staring back at you.
The Beauty Detox program encourages a more natural, holistic approach to food. On the program, you?re encouraged to eat an abundance of healthy foods that are easy for the body to digest, freeing up your Beauty Energy to fight the effects of aging and help you lose weight. For instance, increasing evidence shows that the heavy amount of protein we eat all day long is actually very ageing. My clients start to look younger and feel much better just by swapping that egg white omelet in the morning with my Glowing Green Smoothie, a delicious blended drink made with vegetables and fruits which is one of the foundations of my program.

PRIMPED: Speaking of, green juices and smoothies seem to be a buzz word in the health world today. Can you tell us about your Glowing Green Smoothie, and its beauty benefits?
KS: The Glowing Green Smoothie is the absolute best way to supply yourself with Beauty Energy and Beauty Minerals. In one delicious drink, you get the fuel to not only lose weight, but rejuvenate your skin, fight aging, and increase your energy! It?s so easy, it?s so simple, and it has worked for all my clients, from Hollywood stars to busy mums and school teachers. I often work as the nutritionist on different movie sets, and this amazing thing happens when I do: I start making the Glowing Green Smoothie, and the next thing you know, you look around and all the actors and directors and producers are drinking it every day, because they love the way it makes them feel.
Made up of about 70% green vegetables and 30% fruit, the Glowing Green Smoothie helps you eat far more greens than you ordinarily could. But it is not just the quantity of greens that makes the smoothie so amazing. Because we blend the greens and fruit for easy digestion, your body is able to absorb more of the vitamins and minerals without working so hard. Thanks to all its nutrients and fibre, the smoothie is filling and stabilising to your blood sugar levels.
PRIMPED: In your book you talk about particular foods that promote youthful skin, beautiful hair, eyes and the like. Can you share with us some of your daily must-haves?
KS: There are so many, but here are a few easy ones to include in your diet:
- Cabbage: Cabbage contains vitamins A, C and E. It?s not commonly known that cabbages actually contain about 11% more vitamin C than oranges by weight, and vitamin C is the super anti-ageing nutrient that helps heal damaged tissues and minimise deep lines. Its vitamin A content is also useful in smoothing skin lines.
- Lemon: Lemon aids with digestion by increasing the secretion of bile form the liver, while also acting as a strengthening agent for the liver?s enzymes. Any support to the liver, which is our primary detoxifying organ, is going to help clear up acne in the long run. Lemon is also a vitamin C-rich citrus fruit that helps bring a radiant glow to your complexion, fighting wrinkles and rejuvenating skin from within. It also contains the minerals calcium, potassium and magnesium.
- Watercress: Watercress is a spicy member of the mustard family, and it helps create glowing skin. Its pungent taste is combined with the ability to cleanse and oxygenate tissues. When your body has an increased oxygen supply, you have better blood flow and more glowing skin. Watercress has an array of minerals, including calcium and iodine, that help re-mineralise your body and prevent deficiencies that equate to a dull complexion. Also high in vitamins A, C and E, watercress is useful in treating skin issues, such as acne and eczema.
PRIMPED: What are your top tips for someone who is looking to kick-start a new health and fitness regime?
KS: If we want to look and feel your best, don?t just focus on counting numbers ? kilojoules, carbs, etc. While you might lose some weight initially, it won?t work for the long-run in a holistic sense, your skin will not necessarily look its best and your energy will not be as high as it could be. Kilojoule counting doesn?t take into account how a food digests in your body: if it?s alkaline-forming or acid-forming, whether it is non-processed, contains fibre, etc. When we eat lots of acid-forming foods, we create toxicity in the body and tend to hold onto more weight. A more acidic body tends to age faster as well and can result in dull skin. Alkaline-foods make our body more alkaline, and when our body is more alkaline we are generally more beautiful, healthy and balanced. The truly alkaline foods are fresh fruits and vegetables, which are also loaded with fibre.
PRIMPED: Other than the Glowing Green Smoothie, what is one recipe from the book that we should all try?
KS: Try the Raw Taco Gorilla Wraps. They are super-easy and fast to make, and are a huge hit with all my clients!
